Stay Maison in the Jewish Ghetto in Venice

Established during the 13th century, the Jewish Ghetto in Venice was where Jews were forced to reside during the period of the Venetian Republic, beginning in 1516.
The ghetto was inhabited by four distinct ethnic entities: Germans, Italians, Ponentines, and Levantines.
They lived within the neighborhood until 1797, when French troops led by Napoleon overthrew the Venetian Republic and brought freedom to the Jews as well.
Today the ghetto appears as a veritable island, with access via two bridges. Venetian Jews have moved on and the ghetto is a true widespread museum that can be visited through guided tours.
Within the neighborhood we find:

  • Italian Synagogue;
  • Jewish Museum of Venice: with a collection of ritual and household objects related to Jewish holidays, torah and synagogue adornment textiles, a collection of ketubboth, and a collection of ancient books;
  • Two monuments commemorating the Shoah, made by Lithuanian artist Arbit Blatas;
  • Synagogue Great German School: the main synagogue in the ghetto;
  • Spire Bridge: famous for the spires that adorn it, crosses the Cannaregio Canal;
  • New Ghetto Field: one of the main local squares;
  • Canton Synagogue School: dating back to the 16th century.

It is possible to visit the ghetto via guided tours for a fee.
